Ethiopia Heritage Tour

10 days · Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Axum, Gondar, Simien Mountains · from $3,380 per person

In 1896 an Ethiopian army met an Italian one at Adwa and destroyed it. That single fact reorganised how the world talked about Africa, and it is why Ethiopia carries the meaning it does for Black people everywhere — from Marcus Garvey to Rastafari to the flag colours half the continent adopted afterwards.

Lalibela

Eleven churches carved downward out of solid rock in the twelfth century, still in daily use, still full of priests and pilgrims. Bete Giyorgis, cut as a cross into the ground, is one of the great works of African architecture and nothing prepares you for standing over it.

Axum and the ancient north

The Axumite empire traded with Rome and India and minted its own coinage. The stelae field still stands. The Chapel of the Tablet claims to hold the Ark of the Covenant, and you will hear that claim made seriously, by the people who make it.

Gondar and the Simiens

The castle complex at Gondar — an African royal city of stone-built palaces from the 1600s. Then two days in the Simien Mountains, where gelada troops move across the escarpment in their hundreds.

Included: all internal flights on the northern circuit, 9 nights accommodation, daily breakfast and 7 dinners, all entrances and church fees, national park fees and scout, English-speaking Ethiopian guide throughout, airport transfers.
Not included: international flights, Ethiopia e-visa, insurance, gratuities.
