Apartheid ended within living memory. The people who ended it are still here, and on this tour you meet some of them. This is the freedom trail told by South Africans who were in it — former political prisoners, District Six returnees, Soweto organisers — not a coach commentary.
The ferry from the V&A Waterfront, the limestone quarry, and Mandela’s cell. Tours of the prison are led by former political prisoners. It is the most direct testimony available anywhere on the continent and it is worth arranging your trip around.
District Six and its museum, where a whole community was bulldozed and its people scattered. Bo-Kaap and the Cape Malay history that runs back to enslaved people brought from Indonesia and East Africa. Table Mountain by cable car, and the Cape Peninsula down to the Cape of Good Hope.
The Apartheid Museum, which is one of the finest history museums anywhere. Soweto on foot — Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, and the 1976 student uprising told where it happened. Constitution Hill, a prison turned into the seat of the constitutional court.
