Northern Ghana Tour: Mole National Park, Larabanga & Kintampo Waterfalls

Northern Ghana is the country’s wild, undiscovered frontier — a landscape of sweeping savanna, ancient mosques, elephant-filled national parks, and thundering waterfalls that most visitors to Ghana never see. This Northern Ghana tour takes you far beyond Accra and the coast, deep into a region that rewards adventurous travellers from the UK, USA, Canada, and Europe with extraordinary wildlife, remarkable history, and genuine off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Tour Highlights

  • Mole National Park: Ghana’s largest wildlife reserve (4,840 sq km) and home to over 90 mammal species including African bush elephants, baboons, warthogs, buffalo, and roan antelope. With over 300 bird species, it is also one of West Africa’s premier birdwatching destinations. Guided bush walks bring you within metres of wild elephants — an experience that rivals anything in East Africa at a fraction of the cost.
  • Larabanga Mosque: One of the oldest mosques in West Africa, dating to the 15th century. Built in the distinctive Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick style, this ancient structure is on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List and is a deeply significant site for Muslim communities across the region.
  • Kintampo Waterfalls (Mystic Falls): A spectacular 70-metre wide cascade fed by the Pumpu River — one of Ghana’s most beautiful natural wonders. Swim in the pool below, hike surrounding forest trails, and enjoy the serenity of one of Ghana’s most underrated destinations.
  • Northern Ghana Communities: The north is home to Ghana’s most diverse ethnic communities — including the Dagomba, Gonja, and Mamprusi peoples — with distinct traditions, languages, and crafts including hand-woven smock fabric unique to the region.

Northern Ghana: The Road Less Travelled

While most Ghana tours focus on Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, Northern Ghana offers something rarer: space, silence, and an Africa that feels genuinely wild. The journey north — whether by road or domestic flight to Tamale — is itself part of the experience, as the landscape shifts from tropical forest to open Sahel savanna. For travellers from the UK, USA, and Canada looking for a Ghana experience beyond the usual itinerary, the north is unmissable.
