Northern Ghana is the country’s wild, undiscovered frontier — a landscape of sweeping savanna, ancient mosques, elephant-filled national parks, and thundering waterfalls that most visitors to Ghana never see. This Northern Ghana tour takes you far beyond Accra and the coast, deep into a region that rewards adventurous travellers from the UK, USA, Canada, and Europe with extraordinary wildlife, remarkable history, and genuine off-the-beaten-path experiences.
While most Ghana tours focus on Accra, Cape Coast, and Kumasi, Northern Ghana offers something rarer: space, silence, and an Africa that feels genuinely wild. The journey north — whether by road or domestic flight to Tamale — is itself part of the experience, as the landscape shifts from tropical forest to open Sahel savanna. For travellers from the UK, USA, and Canada looking for a Ghana experience beyond the usual itinerary, the north is unmissable.
Ready to discover Ghana’s wild north? Royalland Tours offers expert-guided Northern Ghana tours for travellers from the UK, USA, Canada, and Europe. Enquire today or book your place and experience Ghana beyond the beaten track.
On your first day, you will arrive in Tamale, the largest city in northern Ghana. You will be met by your tour guide, who will take you to your hotel to freshen up and have breakfast. After breakfast, you will head out to explore Tamale's bustling markets, where you can sample local foods and see artisans at work. You will also visit the Tamale Cultural Centre, where you can learn about the history and traditions of the people of northern Ghana. In the afternoon, you will travel to Mole National Park, the largest wildlife park in Ghana. You will have the opportunity to see elephants, antelopes, warthogs, and other animals as you explore the park on foot or by car. You will stay overnight in a lodge or tented camp within the park, where you can listen to the sounds of the African night.
On your second day, you will visit the historic Larabanga Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in West Africa. The mosque, which dates back to the 15th century, is an impressive example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture and is considered a sacred site by Muslims in Ghana. After visiting the mosque, you will travel to the nearby village of Mognori, where you can experience traditional village life. You will have the opportunity to interact with locals, learn about their customs and traditions, and try your hand at traditional activities such as basket weaving and pottery. In the afternoon, you will return to Mole National Park for another game drive or a guided walk. You will have the chance to see more wildlife and enjoy the stunning scenery of the park.
On your final day, you will visit the Kintampo Waterfalls, a beautiful series of cascading waterfalls nestled in the lush forest of the Kintampo North Municipal District. You will have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing pools and take in the stunning scenery of the falls. After visiting the waterfalls, you will return to Tamale for lunch and some last-minute shopping. Your tour guide will take you to some of the best shops and markets in the city, where you can buy souvenirs such as handmade baskets, textiles, and jewelry. In the late afternoon, your tour guide will drive you to the airport or your hotel for your onward journey. This bespoke itinerary provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the northern part of Ghana in just three days.
