The Ghana Experience

8 days · 7 nights · Accra, Lake Volta, the Krobo hills and the Atlantic at Elmina · from $3,000 per person

Eight days is long enough to see Ghana properly and short enough to take as leave. This itinerary does not try to cover the country — it picks six things worth crossing an ocean for and gives each one a whole day.

You will stand in Independence Square and walk the rooms of Osu Castle. You will learn Adowa from the troupe that performs it rather than watch it from a chair. You will open a cocoa pod on the tree and, three days later, temper that same cocoa into a bar with your own hands. You will make a strand of Krobo powder-glass beads and take it home. You will cross the largest man-made lake in the world with a live band on board. And you will finish on the Atlantic at Elmina.

Why it is built this way

Every working day has two or three anchors and a long lunch, never six stops and a coach. Distances stay short, the driving is done early to beat the traffic, and the one long day — the lake — is spent mostly sitting on a boat with a drink and the water going past.

What is different about this one

  • Protocol at both ends. Your guide meets you airside at Kotoka Terminal 3, so you clear immigration and baggage without queuing — and again on the way out through check-in.
  • Adowa taught, not performed. A private troupe plays for you, then teaches you the posture, the hand language and the steps. Adowa is a conversation; it is much better learned than watched.
  • Cocoa, start to finish. A working farm in the Ayikuma hills on day four, then one of Accra’s best chocolate kitchens on day seven. You see the whole arc, not a gift shop.
  • Gold with provenance. A morning at the state gold authority’s jewellery showroom, where Ghanaian gold is sold with the paperwork to prove where it came from.
  • Beads you make yourself. Recycled bottle glass, ground, moulded and fired at the Krobo workshop that made the craft famous.
  • A day on Lake Volta. The MV Dodi Princess II out to Dodi Island, live band the whole way, lunch and time ashore.

Where you stay

Two bases, so you unpack once and once only: a comfortable hotel in Accra for the first five nights, and a beach resort at Elmina for the coast. Early check-in is arranged on arrival so your room is ready when you land, not at three in the afternoon.

Who it suits

Diaspora travellers making a first or returning journey, solo travellers who want company without a coach party, and couples or small family groups. It runs for as few as one guest. It suits people who would rather see six things properly than twenty things through a window.

Departure days

The Dodi Princess sails at weekends and on public holidays only, so this itinerary starts on a Tuesday or a Wednesday to put the lake on the right day. The festive-season departure — Christmas week in Accra and the turn of the year on the Atlantic — is the signature date and books far ahead. Custom dates run year-round.

What is included

Private vehicle and driver throughout, an English-speaking guide, airport protocol on arrival and departure, all accommodation on the itinerary, daily breakfast, the meals named in the day-by-day, every entry fee and guided experience listed, the Lake Volta cruise, and a 24-hour duty line live for the whole trip. International flights, visas, travel insurance, personal shopping and gratuities are not included.

Day 1: Akwaaba — welcome home
Day 1: Akwaaba — welcome home

Your guide and driver meet you airside at Kotoka International Airport, Terminal 3, with protocol assistance so you clear immigration and baggage without queuing. SIM card and cash if you would like them, then a short transfer and early check-in — your room is ready when you arrive.

The afternoon is deliberately empty. Rest. If you are awake and curious, your guide can walk you out for a first Ghanaian meal. Your driver's mobile number and our 24-hour duty line are yours from the moment you land.

Day 2: Accra heritage, gently
Day 2: Accra heritage, gently

Two places that between them hold most of Ghana's modern story, and then dinner. Nothing else, deliberately — it is your first full day and you will still be finding your feet.

  • Independence Square and the Black Star Gate, the post-independence ceremonial grounds and one of the most photogenic places in Accra.
  • Osu Castle — Christiansborg. Built by the Danes in 1661, later the seat of colonial government and then of Ghana's presidency. Courtyards, reception rooms, the cells and the gardens, with a guide who can tell you what happened in each room.
  • A long, slow lunch in Osu, then the afternoon free.
  • Welcome dinner.

Day 3: Gold, and your first Adowa
Day 3: Gold, and your first Adowa

A gold morning and a drumming afternoon. Two things, both unhurried.

  • The GoldBod jewellery showroom. GoldBod is the state gold authority, and its jewellery arm is where you can see and buy Ghanaian gold with the provenance documented. Take your time; this is the shopping stop of the trip.
  • Warrior King Watch Company.
  • Lunch.
  • Adowa. A private troupe of drummers and dancers perform for you, and then teach you — the posture, the hand language, the steps. Give it as long as you are enjoying it; there is nothing after.

Day 4: Cocoa and beads
Day 4: Cocoa and beads

The best content day of the trip, and almost none of it appears in any guidebook. Two crafts that between them say a great deal about how this country actually works.

  • Depart for Ayikuma, in the hills beyond Dodowa.
  • Hendy Farms. A working cocoa farm — walk among the trees, open fresh pods, and see the beans fermented and dried. Then the mango orchards, and how the farm turns its fruit into its own products.
  • Lunch at the farm.
  • The Cedi Bead Factory at Odumase-Krobo, Ghana's best-known glass-bead workshop. Recycled bottle glass, ground, moulded and fired into Krobo powder-glass beads. You make your own strand, and it is yours.
  • Return to Accra through Somanya.

Day 5: Dodi — a day on Lake Volta
Day 5: Dodi — a day on Lake Volta

The MV Dodi Princess II sails from Akosombo out across Lake Volta — the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area — to Dodi Island. A long day, but not a demanding one: most of it is spent sitting on a boat with a drink and the water going past.

  • Depart Accra for Akosombo, north-east through the Shai hills, with the Akosombo Dam and the Adomi Bridge as the day opens up.
  • Board at the Dodi World jetty. Roughly two hours out across the lake, with a live band playing the whole way.
  • Dodi Island — lunch, drinks and time ashore.
  • Sail back, then the drive to Accra with a stop at the Adomi Bridge viewpoint.

The Dodi Princess sails at weekends and on public holidays only, which is why this itinerary starts on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Day 6: To the coast
Day 6: To the coast

An early start to beat the traffic, and then the whole afternoon at the resort doing nothing at all.

  • Check out and drive west along the coastal road. We leave early deliberately; the roads fill as the day goes on.
  • Arrive at Coconut Grove Beach Resort, Elmina. Check in and lunch by the water.
  • Afternoon: the beach, the pool, the resort spa. Nothing is scheduled.
  • Dinner and live music on the Atlantic. On the festive departure this is New Year's Eve, and your guide can take you to a Watch Night service in Elmina or Cape Coast if you would like to see it.

Day 7: Bean to bar, and goodbye
Day 7: Bean to bar, and goodbye

A slow morning on the coast, then back to Accra to finish the cocoa story you started on day four.

  • Breakfast and a last morning on the beach. Check out and drive east along the coast.
  • Mansa Gold, Ridge. From bean to bar with your own hands — roasting, grinding, tempering, moulding — finishing with a tasting and a wine pairing. You take home what you make.
  • Bioko Treats, Osu. A tree-to-bar tasting flight and a very good place to buy gifts.
  • Farewell dinner with a live highlife band.

Please pack this evening. Traffic on the airport road is unpredictable and we would rather wait at the terminal than rush.

Day 8: Until the next one
Day 8: Until the next one

A final morning at your own pace, with time for any last shopping, then collection from your hotel and transfer to Kotoka International Airport, Terminal 3, with protocol assistance through check-in.
