PANAFEST 2027 Celebration in Ghana

25 July – 3 August 2027 · Cape Coast, Elmina & Accra
Theme: “Ensuring the African Kinship: Our Essence, Our Well-being, Our Prosperity”

PANAFEST — the Pan African Historical Theatre Festival — returns to Ghana in 2027. Held every two years since 1992, it is the largest gathering of the African diaspora on the continent: ten days of theatre, film, music, scholarship and ritual built around one idea, that the people taken from this coast were never truly separated from it. Our ten-day Ghana tour places you inside it, not beside it.

Why 2027 is the one to travel for

The 2027 edition closes on Emancipation Day, 1 August, when the festival moves to Cape Coast and Elmina for the Reverential Night vigil and the return-to-the-castles procession. It is the emotional centre of the whole programme, and it falls squarely inside your itinerary. Numbers swell every cycle, and accommodation in Cape Coast is limited — the diaspora groups who travel well are the ones who book early.

The Durbar of Chiefs

The opening ceremony brings chiefs and dignitaries from across the continent together in full regalia, carried in palanquins beneath the umbrellas of state, accompanied by drumming and dance that has not changed in generations. It is one of the great sights in African cultural life, and you will be close enough to feel the drums rather than watch them.

What the festival programme holds

PANAFEST spreads across theatre, film screenings, live music, craft markets, academic colloquia and open street events. Artists, scholars and activists come from the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe and across Africa. You can spend a morning in a conference on restitution and an evening in a courtyard concert — and most travellers tell us the conversations between the two are what they remember.

Beyond the festival

Around the PANAFEST programme, this tour takes in Accra’s heritage sites and Jamestown, the Ashanti court at Kumasi, the Kumasi craft villages, the Kakum canopy walkway, and the Cape Coast and Elmina castles. For many travellers the castles are the reason for the trip; we build the pacing around that, with time and quiet where it is needed rather than a schedule that rushes you through.

Who this tour suits

Diaspora travellers making a first return, families travelling across three generations, and groups who want the festival handled end to end — airport transfers, vetted hotels, a guide who knows the castle staff by name, and a seat at the events that sell out. Also suited to arts and culture travellers who want the continent at its most alive.
